Do You Need Vst Plugins
VST is an interface specification of how a plug-in communicates with a host, so the plug-in efficiency depends on the plug-in, not on the VST spec. Both VST 2.4 and VST3 plug-ins have a common code base, and virtually all of a plug-in’s internal code is identical — move along, there’s nothing to see here. From there you just need to press F11 to load up the VST instrument page (Or go Devices VST Instruments). If the.dll files are in the right folder they should at least show up. If they fail to load they'll be corrupt but it usually tells you if there's a problem, if they don't show up they might be the wrong file type or missing other files. If you do use plugins, you will select them more easilly, because you kind of know what you want. It will be a bit more difficult to work this way in the beginning, but once you get the hang of itit really is a time saver and will influence discission making on a positive way. VST plugins are an essential part of music production. There would literally be no music produced if it weren’t for software plugins. As a digital audio workstation is simply a virtual desk where you can organize, arrange, and create your music, you can think of it as essentially your blank slate.

SonEQ has 3 bands, low (20 Hz – 100 Hz), mid (150 Hz – 4 kHz), high (6 kHz – 15 kHz). Combined with a high pass and low pass filter, plus a ‘Mid-high Q’ this means when it’s on your band its narrow and when deactivated will cause it to be wider. This indicated by the red light.
Giving the user a lot of ways to EQ but keeping things user-friendly is what SonEQ does best.
Having the volume meter is very hand when mixing with any EQ, it gives the visual display of when things are getting a bit heated for your output.
SonEQ also gives you the full control of your input and output levels. This comes in handy when you are mixing your tracks with heavy effects, causing the overall levels to become louder than 0.0dB; this is where adjusting both the input and output parameters will solve the issue.

PTEq-X is a digital emulation of three famous vintage EQ.

EQ1A is a FREE analog-style EQ with a clever algorithm giving you minimal phase coloration.
This plugin has initially been paid to use the plugin, but the developers have decided to give it to us all for FREE!
EQ1A allows you to use broad bands to shape your sounds or outputs in a clean, crisp and phase-corrected way.
Being able to save you presets within the plugin makes it very easy to pull back that EQ you made on the last mix. 4-band parametric equalizer with an additional HP filter with variable resonance gives a wide range of settings to play with while keeping everything simple and user friendly.
EQ1A does what it says on the tin for FREE!

This addition is the Marvel GEQ, which is a fifteen band linear phase EQ.
There is a routing tab that allows you to affect the signals mid/sides independently. (orange slides)
Also giving full independence to the mid/side output level, becoming very useful when mixing and mastering.
Bypass feature makes it simple to hear what your EQ is doing to your sound source. Alternatively, decide between two EQ setups with the A/B mode.
For quick EQ drawing, you can hold ‘Ctrl or Cmd’ and click across the EQ drawing in your fader settings with the click of a mouse.

In our top spot, we have Colour EQ by DDMF.
This plugin brings so many features that you would expect from pay to use plugins but all for FREE! Another fresh point is that the curves you can create with this cannot be done on other EQ plugins, giving Colour EQ a versatile approach.

Parametric, dynamic EQ, and multiband compression are all built into an excellent looking FREE plugin.
Nova has a built-in dynamic EQ parameter when mixing, and mastering using a dynamic EQ is crucial sometimes. Having this all in one plugin for free is hugely commendable to the team who developed this plugin!

Today we have covered a lot of great FREE EQs for mixing and mastering. Amazingly, we have developers putting out all of these plugins for producers/sound engineers to level out the playing field. As we have all seen these ‘not to name’ brands releasing rather expensive EQs that we just can’t fork out for, but with the way, music has progressed today in the digital domain it has become much more accessible for creatives to share their ideas and effects for free.
With that said, they all have their benefits and downsides, but with them all being free, there is no reason you can’t pick them up and use these in your mixes or masters today!

You can’t deny it. I can’t deny it.
We all like shiny new things.
But herein lies the #1 problem people have with mixing…
Too many choices.
There are just seven plugins that will get you 80% of the way to a professional, studio-level mix.

Sure, the last 20% might require a few new toys…
But until you can get a great mix with just these seven tools, you aren’t ready to enter that world.
It’s a dangerous world, after all. Mixing is all about skill, not gear, and GAS is the main reason why people fail to ever achieve the sound in their head.
If you want to make fast progress, you need to focus on the core tools at your disposal. Master these seven plugins, and you are well on your way to higher quality mixes.

Gain
Let’s get the boring stuff out the way first: gain staging.
This isn’t something you should obsess over. Every track doesn’t need to be exactly -18dBFS. Just aim to have 10dBFS of headroom on most channels.
So, how do you do this? You need a trim plugin in your first slot.
Different DAWs have a different name for this.
- Pro Tools: Trim
- Logic Pro: Gain
- Studio One: Mixtool
- Cubase: Pre Gain (not a plugin, but a feature)
You could also try this free plugin from Sienda.
If the channel looks hot, load up a gain plugin in your first slot and lower the gain until you can see the channel is peaking at roughly -10dBFS. That’s it.
EQ
Now for the fun stuff…
You probably guessed that this would be on the list. After volume balancing, EQ is the most important tool at your disposal.
It’s the only plugin that has the potential to appear on almost every channel, so spend plenty of time learning it.
Compression
After volume balancing and EQ, compression is next in order of importance.
In fact, I’d go as far to say that 80% of the sound of your mix comes from these three things.
For most people, compression is harder to grasp than EQ. But once you really understand how a compressor works, and the incredible versatility of this tool, things really start to fall into place.
Reverb
Up until this point we’ve covered the essentials for creating a balanced mix. Now we can add some additional interest.
Reverb is a hot topic. Over the last couple of decades, it’s played a very supportive role. Delay was at the forefront. But now, it seems reverb is making a comeback.
Either way, this is a crucial plugin in your repertoire. When used subtly, it’s how you create depth, cohesion and space in your mixes. Used liberally, it’s an effective way to add character and help make your mixes sound larger than life.
Delay
The main problem with reverb is that it’s often used as a crutch. Beginners will use reverb to mask mistakes and poor mixes. It’s also easy to make your mixes sound muddy and cluttered with improper use.
That’s where delay comes in. It allows you to create space and depth without filling up the mix and getting in the way.
Whether it’s a stereo slapback delay on the vocal, a timed echo used for emphasis, or a single slapback to move something further back in a mix — this can be an extremely valuable tool.
Limiting
This one only applies if you don’t get your tracks mastered.
Sure, many people use limiters when mixing, but in that context it’s by no means a crucial plugin.
But, if you want to share your music without getting it mastered, a limiter can help make it loud.
Maintain headroom throughout the mix, then load up a limiter as the final plugin on your mix buss or master fader. Set the ceiling to -0.01dB, increase the gain until you see 2-3dB of gain reduction on the louder peaks, and you’re done.
Gating
Most people wouldn’t consider this tool essential. And let me be clear — it’s the least important plugin on this list.
But if you were to reduce your collection to only seven plugins, for the rest of your life, this should be one of them.
Personally, I can’t mix drums without using a gate. And that’s the main use case here. Without using a gate on the kick and snare, I can never get the tone I want for the overall kit.
Perhaps this is a weakness of mine, or perhaps I’m not alone in this. Either way, for me, this is an essential tool.

Bonus: Saturation
Technically, saturation isn’t required to produce a radio-worthy mix. But it will certainly help.
Out of all of the additional tools available to you, saturation is perhaps the most important for taking your mixes from good to great.
For that reason, it felt wrong to leave it off this list.
