Free RTAS Plugins – Yes, They Do Exist

Pro Tools First comes with over 20 effects and utility plug-ins to add some secret sauce to your tracks with EQ, dynamics, reverb and delay, as well as perform corrective and other useful tasks, such as dithering, phase reverse, generating click tracks, and more. It’s even possible to use VST/AU plugins in Pro Tools First, the free version of Pro Tools 12. One of the things that separates Pro Tools from other DAWs is the proprietary AAX format that it uses for plugins.   1. The ability to automate Pro Tools First plugins allows you to do things such as switch plugins on and off during the session or change the settings of a plugin. I regularly automate plugins to create an effect such as switching on a vocal delay somewhere in the song which only lasts for a few seconds.
  2. The version of Pro Tools First that comes bundled with qualifying Focusrite products includes access to a number of individual plugins. A full list of additional plugins can be found here. Some of these are actually demo or trial versions, but it’s a start.

Free RTAS Plugins From VST – Time To Wrap Up

If you really want to use VST plugins with your Pro Tools rig, there is a way – you can get yourself a wrapper program that acts as an interface between the VST and Pro Tools itself.

You can buy this program from FXpansion for about €75, and once it’s installed then you can call up your VSTs in Pro Tools just like you would your usual RTAS Plugins.
