This one perhaps one of the few if not only best free VST synth on this list that is more suitable for an advanced user than someone who is just starting out. It features many controls and parameters that can be overwhelming to a beginner, but satisfying to a pro.

Now, about its sound, which should be the primary reason to using a synthesizer. Considering that it’s loosely modeled off the Roland JP8000, its users have considered it one of the best sounding free VST synths on the freeware market. Expect it to have a fairly unique sound suitable for trance, new age, electronic music, house, or even pop. The pads are what many users consider its most attractive asset, because of the richness and thickness of the sounds that the P8 produces.

And discoDSP’s OB-Xd is constantly referred to as the “best” as well. And listening to its sounds, utilizing it’s interface, and working with its features, it’s hard to not see why this synth isn’t actually THE best. But, so are many of the others on the list…

So, what makes this one unique?

For starters, it was modeled on the Oberheim OB-X, OB-Xa and OB-8 synthesizers. These classic vintage hardware synths were famous back in the day, and contributed to many hit records. Right now, they continue to enjoy their legacy in this freeware plugin.

The developers claim that they are not “copying” the originals, but rather take the same features and improve upon them. Whatever that means, it just sounds good to me.

Expect all the features you should find in a standard synthesizers, as well as some cool sounding features like the “continuous blendable multimode filter,” which is a filter allowing you to blending different filter types (such as high-pass, band-pass) in different dB modes. Prophet ’08 Factory Program Banks

The downloadable file in the sidebar at the right contains all of the factory program banks for the Prophet ’08 keyboard and desktop module. it also includes the installation instructions given below. The program data is in a MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) file that can be loaded into the Prophet ’08 via MIDI using a MIDI utility or other application capable of opening and transmitting SysEx files. The simplest method may be to use a shareware MIDI utility such as SysEx Librarian (Mac OS) or MIDI-OX (Windows).

You will also need a MIDI interface to connect your computer to the Prophet ’08.

There is nothing you need to do to prepare the Prophet ’08 to receive the programs. Once the transfer begins, the programs will automatically be written to the Prophet ’08’s memory.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Be aware that loading programs overwrites any programs that are currently in memory. If you have programs you want to keep, be sure to save them to a SysEx file first. Refer to the manual for more information about initiating a SysEx dump from the Prophet ’08’s front panel controls.

LOADING PROGRAMS FROM A MAC USING SYSEX LIBRARIAN

Before starting, close all other audio or MIDI or DAW software, and disconnect all other MIDI devices. If necessary, download and install SysEx Librarian.

Connect the MIDI out of your computer’s MIDI interface to the Prophet ’08’s MIDI in. Depending on the type of MIDI interface, you may also need a MIDI cable to connect the interface to Prophet ’08.

To load the programs:

1. Run SysEx Librarian.
2. Choose your MIDI interface from the “Destination” menu.
3. Click Add/+ to add the file to the file list or simply drag and drop the file on the open SysEx Librarian window. The file name appears in the file list and should be highlighted.
4. Click Play. You’ll see the programs changing on the Prophet ’08 as the they are being written.

When the transmission completes, you’re done!

If the load fails to start, make sure the Prophet ’08 is actually receiving MIDI data. On the MIDI Channel page of the Global menu, a dot blinks between “MIDI” and “Channel” when MIDI data is received. Also, make sure that MIDI SysEx in the Global menu is set to “On.”
